What Long Island Homeowners Need to Know About Bed Bugs

Helpful Bed Bug Prevention Tips:

Be sure to clean your laundry regularly. Changing and washing your clothes, bedding, hampers, and throw rugs that touch the floor can stop the spread of bed bugs.

Whenever you travel, seal your clothing in vacuum-sealed bags. Travelers frequently pick up bed bugs and bring them home, or transport them between hotel rooms.

Vacuum your carpets thoroughly. This is a prevalent place bed bugs love to hide in your home.

electrical outlet

Make sure you cover electrical outlets. Bed bugs use crevices and holes in electric outlets to hide.

pet bed

Clean pet beds thoroughly. Bed bugs are not only attracted to our beds, but also love to lay eggs and hide in pet beds because of the warmth and crevices.

Bed Bug FAQs

What Do Bed Bugs Look Like?

Adult bed bugs are flat, oval-shaped, and reddish-brown. When fully matured, adults are 4-5mm in length and 1.5-3mm wide, or about the size of an apple seed. Bed bugs have no hind wings, and their front wings are suppressed and reduced to flat, pad-like structures. The bodies of adult bed bugs are segmented with tiny hairs that give them a banded appearance.

Newly hatched baby bed bugs are smaller and are called nymphs. Nymphs are translucent, or a light tannish color, and they gradually become darker as they grow.

Immediately after feeding, the body of adult bed bugs will change to a brighter, translucent red color. After a few hours, their color will fade to brown. Over the course of the next two days, they will begin to digest their meal, causing their bodies to change to an opaque black color.

Do bed bugs bite?

Yes, bed bugs do bite, and the surrounding area of the bite site on your skin will become red, irritated, itchy, and bumps will soon appear. The bumps typically form across the skin in a line or cluster formation. Additionally, some Long Island residents have reported hives and blistering in the bite area.

What If a Bed Bug Bites Me?

If a bed bug bites you, don’t panic. Although bed bug bites can be irritating, they cannot transmit diseases like some other pests and insects. Take the precautions outlined here and be sure to call Fox Pest Control of Long Island if you’ve been bitten.

Can Bed Bugs Cause Structural Damage?

Because bed bugs feed on human blood, they do not cause structural damage. However, the presence of a bed bug infestation can impact your property value. To ensure that your home is free from bed bugs, contact the professionals at Fox Pest Control and gain peace of mind.

What Is the Best Treatment for a Bed Bug Infestation?

One of the most adequate and effective ways to treat a bed bug infestation is a two-part strategy like Fox Pest Control uses. First, we will identify your Long Island home’s high traffic bed bug areas. Once we’ve determined this, we’ll treat the areas with our safe and efficient insecticide. Then, insecticide dust will be applied to surrounding electrical outlets and other typical bed bug hiding places. One week later, this process is repeated to ensure the bed bugs are gone for good.

Dillon was exceptional. Extensive knowledge of insects and took his time, making sure he covered all areas outside – which he did. We haven’t seen an ant or stinkbug anywhere in the house since he was here.

Barbara Burgess

Luis, has been maintaining my home and does an excellent job in keeping rodents and insects at bay especially living near the woods. He goes beyond other services I have used in the past and explains everything carefully when I ask questions! Awesome work Luis! Highly recommend and what keeps me using this company.

Danny did an amazing job taking down a wasp nest that was very high up. He responded quickly and did what he had to do to get it down completely. We are very grateful for his help, his time and his quick response. He did not rush the service and made sure to stay till it was taken care of. Danny is pleasant and very helpful and I appreciate him going above and beyond to make sure it was gone. We look forward to having him around to help us with future pest needs.
